It seems as if the Caesar salad has always been around—perhaps because Julius Caesar ate it, and the dish was named after him. In reality, Caesar Cardini first put it together in 1924.

Step 1

Rinse, pat dry, and tear the lettuce leaves into small pieces, then set them aside in the refrigerator.

Place 1 tablespoon of butter in a hot skillet. Once it has completely melted and begins to sizzle, toss in a garlic clove sliced into thin pieces.

Cut the chicken breast into pieces approximately 1 × 3 cm. Place them in a pan with garlic and oil. Fry over high heat for about 10 minutes until a golden crust forms. Remove from the heat.

Add another tablespoon of butter and a second clove of garlic to the same pan. Meanwhile, cut the bread into small cubes. Add them to the pan and fry until a golden crust forms. It’s best to stir continuously so they don’t burn.

Get the lettuce leaves, then add the fried chicken breast and tomatoes sliced into thin strips. Dress with Caesar sauce, mix, and then top with the croutons and grated cheese.
